RUSSIAN NIGHTCLUB FIRE

The fire in December at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia killed 153 people, 94 at the scene and 59 in hospitals afterwards. Deaths were from burns, smoke inhalation and stampede.

The fire started when fireworks were set off to celebrate the club's eighth anniversary. Sparks from these ignited the ceiling which had a willow twig covering. Around 300 people were in the building, which was officially licensed for 50.

Since the tragedy four people have been arrested, charged and detained. It has also been discovered that the construction of the building was very different to the planning permission, in terms of public safety, given, and that a blind and possibly bribed eye was turned to this.

The tragedy is very similar to the nightclub fire in Rhode Island, USA, in 2003 where fireworks ignited the foam ceiling, killing 100 people.

JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER

Two directors of a firework company have been jailed following an explosion which killed two firefighters, and injured 20 people in December 2006. (Health and Safety at Work)

Martin Winter was jailed for seven years and his son Nathan for five years after Lewes Crown Court heard that a large number of fireworks due to be exported were stored in an unsafe container, to which a fire at the firm's premises, in Shortgate near Lewes, had spread.

At the time the company traded as Festival Fireworks but changed its name to Alpha Fireworks.

VERY MOTIVATIONAL

An American motivational and training expert has been charged with manslaughter after 21 out of 65 of his delegates needed hospital treatment and three died after attending one of his motivational courses.

James Ray, who has made millions out of books and courses on spiritual and financial fulfilment charged delegates 9000 dollars each to take part in a "sweat lodge" ceremony whereby they fasted for 36 hours and then spent two hours in a steam-filled tent, in complete darkness.

The event was held at the Angel Valley Retreat Centre, Arizona, last October. If convicted on the three counts of manslaughter Ray faces up to 12 years in prison.

HOTEL SCAFFOLDING COLLAPSE UPDATE

The collapse of scaffolding in April 2006 at the Milton Keynes Jurys Inn hotel, which left one worker dead and two with serious injuries, has cost two of the contracting companies £196,000 in fines and costs. (Health and Safety at Work)

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told Huntingdon Crown Court that severe overloading at one end of the 40-metre high structure led to the collapse.

A warrant is out for the arrest of the managing director of a third contracting firm involved.

DEATH AT THE LANDMARK

A Saudi man in his 30's has been found dead from head injuries in his room at the five-star Landmark Hotel, Marylebone.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and a member of the Saudi Arabian royal family has been arrested.

FEEDING FRENZY WARNING

Hoteliers have been warned not to rip off visitors attending the London 2012 Olympics, due to run July 27 to August 12 and generate nearly 1 million bed-nights, and the Paralympics, running from August 29 to September 9 and generating around 100,000 bed-nights.

The warning has been given by Christopher Gale of the InterContinental Hotel Group, who has pointed out that extortionate prices charged by hoteliers during the Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004 games left some with empty rooms. (Caterer and Hotelkeeper)

Meanwhile there are claims that some hoteliers in Capetown are increasing prices for World Cup visitors from £68 per room per night including breakfast to £318.

EARLS COURT TO CLOSE?

Earls Court is likely to close as an exhibition centre after the Olympics in 2012 (Conference News)

Exhibitions have been held there for more than 70 years but the new owners, developers CapCo, favour a more profitable mixed-use development on the 70-acre site.

In the 1990's Earls Court's owners, P&O, tarnished the image of the exhibition industry with their operation of monopolistic "tied" contracts whereby exhibitors were forced to pay inflated prices for electrical, catering and other services, prices that included a grubby kick-back commission for the venue. Following complaints to the Office of Fair Trading and the Monopolies and Mergers Commission laws were passed, which P&O tried to have revoked, to force Earls Court and other venues to clean up their ethics. The chairman of P&O at the time was Lord Sterling, or "Lord Stealing" as he became known.

WATCH YOUR POCKETS

Police intelligence experts are warning that gangs of pickpockets, probably from Romania and Algeria, will be targeting UK festivals this year. (Festival UK)

The gangs usually get their tickets from touts so those festivals where touts are seen outside the venue are especially at risk.

FAST TRACK

A new "super station" to handle the planned 250mph trains is planned for the Euston area of London.

If the trains become a reality they will be the fastest in the world, travelling from London to Birmingham in 57 minutes, and giving some serious competition to domestic flights.

RSVP 2010

The RSVP exhibition of event products and services takes place on April 28-29 at the Business Design Centre, Islington.

OLD GRITS DIARY

Monday

Old Grit notes that the most welcome scrutiny of MP's continues in the Daily Telegraph with questions about the supportive relationship between MP Robert Wareing and a conference and seminar organiser specialising in the Russian market, LVA, based in Harrow.

Reportedly Wareing has used his position to book functions for LVA delegates at taxpayer-funded House of Commons facilities, events on which LVA have made substantial profits. According to House of Commons rules the private dining rooms are "not to be used for direct or indirect financial or material gain by a sponsor, political party or any other person or organisation"

So all LVA's general manager, Mark Proskourine, now has to do, to play by the rules, is pay back all the profit his firm have made out of the arrangement into the public purse, just like so many MP's are having to do. Problem solved.

Wednesday

One hotel Old Grit won’t be visiting again is the Oaklands, near Norwich, which advertises a carvery for £3.50 in the Norwich and Norfolk eating out guide, distributed by the Norwich Tourist Board.

When OG arrived to enjoy this in mid-December he was told that the one-course carvery was off "because of Christmas" and offered a two-course meal instead, for £7.50.

Fortunately, near the Oaklands is one of the excellent Crown Carveries, the Town House, which do actually deliver what they advertise, a good traditional carvery for £3.50, with drinks at pub prices. See www.crowncarveries.co.uk for a list.

Thursday

Amusing to note that political golden boy, Labour MP James Purnell is leaving Parliament.

Purnell walked out of the Cabinet during the MP's expenses scandal, calling optimistically on Gordon Brown to resign. He is also known for having photographs doctored, to pretend that he was somewhere he wasn’t.

Thankfully he wasn't employed to represent the events industry to government, as some in the industry wanted a few years back, and is now expected to find something that will make best use of his talents, like PR.

FROM OUR READERS

1) From Barry Prince

Hello SEO Team!

Greetings from Down Under.

I regret to say that I shall be relinquishing my subscription to your newsletter, but not without saying that as a working journalist and Editor I always found it informative and entertaining – and an excellent antidote to the PC brigade.

In passing, I was delighted to see that the SEO ran a How To Write A Press Release event – and hope it was well attended – because I am sorry to say that the individuals in charge of ensuring local and global publicity through the Media are one of the 'trials' of hardworking Editors.

We mainly receive texts that are so OTT that we begin to wonder what sort of tobacco is being smoked by the authors, or a turgid text that reads like an internal memo from one bean-counter to another. Some 'sales managers' really try, but the majority are really trying!

Without doubt, some of them recognise that they do not have the right skill-set for the job – such as some familiarity with the conventions of journalism – and, therefore, may welcome a free newsletter that I recently launched to help (mainly) industrial sales managers to communicate with their target audiences via the global trade press.

Kind Regards from
Barry Prince
