Exhibitors and visitors attending some of our industry events will be cheered to hear that one organiser at least is taking a firm line with the pests who tour the events to ply their trade and waste the exhibitor's and visitor's valuable and limited time.

Visitors to the recent Best of Britain and Ireland travel trade forum had the admission policy made clear in the registration form which sensibly stated: “Following feedback from the 2009 event we must stress that under no circumstances are visitors permitted to canvass or sell goods or services to ANY exhibitors or visitors. Anyone seen to be plying their trade in this way will be asked to leave the event and forfeit any right to subsequent admission to the event".

Event industry shows that have suffered from this in the past have been Confex and RSVP, usually from representatives of trade magazines selling advertorials and advertising.

Those looking to save some money on their 2011 events might want to consider how the year's Easter and Bank Holidays will be falling and how this could affect hotel bookings.

The later Easter, with Good Friday on April 25, two Bank Holidays on May 2nd and May 30th, coupled with school holidays are producing what one hotelier told us was "A potentially quiet six weeks"

A good time to haggle, we'd say.

Those exhibitionists in the events industry might be interested to learn that a history of the exhibition industry is currently being compiled for publication.

The author, former exhibition contractor Michael Corgan, would like to talk to anyone with experiences, good and bad, from 1945 onwards.

Scalford Hall Hotel, three miles north of England's pork pie and stilton capital, offers a three star standard for training, conferences and teambuilding.

Set in 12 acres of landscaped grounds with permanent teambuilding equipment, Scalford has 88 en-suite bedrooms, nine with baths as well as showers, nine meetings rooms for 16-85, all with natural light, and 15 syndicate rooms. Two of the meetings rooms can be used for private dining for 30/40 and in addition there is a lounge area for up to 120

The hotel prides itself, rightly from a recent press visit we made, on it's home baking and delegates can enjoy this, along with unlimited tea and coffee for a day rate from £32 and a 24-hour rate from £99.

New for 2010 is a Data Conferencing Suite at Weetwood Hall Conference Centre and Hotel, around 5 miles north of Leeds.

Using the latest SMART technology the facility can be used for a secure remote conference for up to 40 remote participants sitting at their computers. Full participant interaction and team collaboration can be achieved with complete confidentiality, and activities recorded as they happen for meetings, training, demonstrations, ideas creation, presentations and E learning, all with minimal environmental damage.

Hire cost of the suite is £350 per day and £150 per half day, prices including unlimited tea and coffee for up to 10 people running the events. Adlacent to the suite is an Ideas and Inspiration Room and a Creative Thinking Room, both available for £150 a day each, or £100 for a half day.

Small gatherings are a speciality at the 18-bedroom Marquess of Exeter pub/restaurant/hotel which has a meetings room for up to 14 delegates, and is located in the pretty village of Lyddington, Rutland.

A day delegate rate for 2010, based on 10-14 delegates, would be from £25. For dining events the newly furbished restaurant can accommodate up to 80 and the chef's speciality is sharing dishes for two, such as grilled beef rib (£33) and roast shoulder of lamb (£25.50)

One small but expanding group of Thai restaurants offering opportunities to event organisers is Chaophraya, which has units in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.

Serving, in our experience, generous quantities of excellent Thai cuisine, and getting positive praise in the trusted Hardens independent food guide, Chaophraya offers two enclosed private function rooms for 18 and 20 at its Manchester branch, which accommodates 120. Liverpool has a VIP room for 32 above its bar, three sunken table areas for groups of up to 14 and a total capacity of 250. Leeds has a capacity for 120.

Those still spending money on corporate hospitality might like to note the Royal Set menu, a Thai feast which requires 48 hours notice and costs £80 a head.

The above takes place at the Emirates Stadium, London on Wednesday May 12.

Around 40 venues from 20 locations will be featured, and there are free seminars on inspirational events, cost-effective events and communication skills.

How unfortunate that just as some are waffling about the world-class welcome that visitors to the 2012 Olympics will be getting in London, a survey by hotel group Jury's Inns published in the Daily Telegraph shows that London tops the list of the UK's ten most unwelcoming cities.

For the record the other nine, in descending order, were Glasgow, Bradford, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Aberdeen, Wolverhampton, Belfast and Leeds.

The upcoming election, the likelihood of cuts in event spend in the public sector and the concern in the corporate sector over the impact of a widely forecast hung Parliament has sparked the usual futile and self-interested calls for Government to recognise the importance of the sector and it's need for financial support.

When are our industry suppliers going to realise that events, like tourism, happen because people want them to and that this need is only likely to be affected by the state of the economy and not by Government hand-outs?

Most entertaining, it is to note the current little spat between the Meetings Industry Association (MIA) supplier consortium and the mendacious Martin "Porky" Lewis of Meetings and Incentive Travel (M&IT) magazine.

Porky recently revealed that the MIA was "over £77,000 in the red", which prompted the hurt response that the consortium had been "a lifelong supporter" of Porky's organ and that his story was "far too negative and cynical"

Quite what form the MIA's lifelong support for Porky has taken is not known, and neither party is letting on, but if it's been the normal financial one between our industry suppliers and trade publications this might explain where the £77, 000 has gone.
