German billionaire businessman and hotelier Dieter Bock died aged 70 choking on a piece of steak served in his room at the five-star Atlantic Hotel, Hamburg on May 12.
As well as the 250-room Atlantic, featured in the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, Bock's portfolio included the Bristol in Berlin, the Taschenbergpalais in Dresden and the Gravenbruch in Frankfurt.
Bock was probably best known for his time at British mining conglomerate Lonrho, and his ousting of its founder, Tiny Rowland, the man former PM Edward Heath described as "an unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism" Rowland was also the owner of the Observer newspaper, whose paid editor Donald Trelford penned a number of supportive pieces about his paymaster, before becoming a highly- regarded lecturer at a north-country university, in (er) journalism.
Following a fire in early May in which one person died the four-star Majestic Hotel in Harrogate remains closed while police identify the person who died, and the cause of death. (Caterer and Hotelkeeper)
The hotel is operated by Barcelo Hotels and a kitchen porter there is still unaccounted for after the fire.
Train operating companies First Capital Connect (FCC) and Southeastern have been censured by consumer magazine Which? for selling passengers first class tickets for trips where limited or no first class facilities exist.
This is the case with an FCC journey from Luton Airport Parkway to Wimbledon and from London to Dover Priory by Southeastern.
Both organisations are members of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), for what it's worth, and both expect their passengers to be honest with them over the purchase of tickets.
Organisers of events looking to gain an edge might want to take serious note of some of the research into the effect of smells currently being carried out.
A recent article in the Daily Telegraph revealed the following:
o Smells can affect our mental state, our mental and physical performance and our responses.
o The part of the brain handling smell is adjacent to that handling memory and emotion, so if a smell is experienced as part of a happy or unhappy memory then exposure to the same smell will trigger that memory, and that emotion.
o Students who have learned in a room infused with the scent of lavender or rosemary were better able to remember far more information when exposed to the same scents again.
o Students exposed to rose scent as they slept, which also produces pleasant dreams, had better recall of the material studied before sleep, even without being exposed to the scent again.
o The presence of jasmine in a room can improve problem-solving.
o Cinnamon and peppermint can boost working memory and the ability to concentrate, while peppermint can also boost strength and endurance.
The concentration on attracting PA's to the latest RSVP show (April 29-30, Business Design Centre) led to some exhibitors wondering if organiser Tim Etchells of Single Market Events was simply diluting the quality of the visitors to improve the quantity.
Generally staff at PA level do not organise serious events, but are more likely to be involved in booking hotel rooms and meals for their employers. It is thought that the collapse of the Times Creme exhibition last year, arguably for this reason, left a perceived gap in the market Etchells thought he could fill, perhaps without noting the absence of a viable market in the gap
A measure of the level of the PA market can be gained from the advertisement in the exhibition catalogue for a restaurant booking agency, Toptable, looking to bribe PA's to place business. This states: "PAs eat for free! Book your manager's business lunches on toptable and YOU earn the loyalty points. It won't bee long before YOU are dining out at swanky restaurants for FREE. Hey - why should they have all the fun?"
Team-building activities are a waste of time, and money.
This is the conclusion of researchers at the University of Chester, who surveyed people who played team sports and found no link between how often they played and the bond they felt to their group.
On this basis, they said, such activities as walking on hot coals or paintball were of no bonding value.
A budget option for organisers is available at the Travelodge at Vicar Lane, Leeds.
This offers three rooms each holding up to 50 theatre-style for a full day room hire fee of £100.
A buffet lunch or full breakfast is £7.50, bacon rolls are £2.50 and unlimited tea and coffee is £3, with bedroom rates starting from £19.
0113 245 3040
Leeds United Football Club are planning a new 2000 square metre, £3 million conference and exhibition centre with a conference capacity of 1,600 theatre-style, and a six-metre high roof.
The centre is expected to be completed by September.

Revenge, it seems, is in the air for the long-suffering British Airways passengers continuing to be held to ransom by BA's cabin crew for improvements in their already generous rewards.
An email circulating around the City is encouraging passengers to "PUSH THE BUTTON "and get some satisfaction from, perfectly legally, summoning BA's cabin crew at least ten times during the flight and making them earn their enhanced rewards. This is because BA cabin crew clearly have no compunction about disrupting people's holidays, business trips and emergency travel to better line their pockets.
This does seem like a jolly good idea to Old Grit especially as it could make the greedy ones think twice before screwing up our lives. Some suggested excuses for pressing the button could be;
o Is my luggage definitely in the hold?
o Where is my breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack/drink?
o How experienced is the pilot?
o Can you guarantee you haven't been drinking?
o How much do you earn now?
o Why are the bubbles in my champagne so large/small?
o I missed the safety announcement. Could you do it again please?
o Are we nearly there yet?
That's the way to do it.
Old Grit is tickled to learn about the new Italian divorce fair, held last month in Milan.
Ex Punto E A Capo means "turning over a new leaf" (bed?) and the show, aimed at the estimated 150,000 Italian couples who now untie the knot every year, featured advice on what to do with a philandering husband or wife and how to hire a detective to catch them at it.
Given that a large proportion of the visitors will be those thinking about divorce OG wonders if chance meetings with one's current partner, or bumping into a friend, relative, neighbour or one's employer could be potentially embarrassing, or even profitable?. Or if the organiser has CCTV images of all visitors? Or if it was opened by the man who sets such a good example, Italian stallion Mr Berlusconi?
We should be told.
Meanwhile Old Grit's colleague, Old Gannet, has been experiencing a mixture of foodie experiences. On the minus side were the caterers at Lister Hospital, Stevenage, where diabetics are offered jam and marmalade with their breakfast roll, and no alternative, where the first hot drink of the day is offered by the caterers at around 08.30 after the patients are commonly woken up between 05.00 and 06.00 and extra hot water is refused to visitors ordering pots of tea from the hospital coffee shop. Old Gannet also notes the high level of complaints about the catering from the hospital's staff, who are supposed to get subsidised food and advises anyone having to spend any time at this particular establishment to consider supplying some of their own food, as he did.
On the plus side Old Gannet can definitely recommend a Ramsgate fish restaurant, Eddie Gilberts, which has a fishmongers and take-away food section on the ground floor and a very good dining room upstairs, holding 40-50 people. Portions are large and the two course lunch menu for £8 delivered a bowl of thai steamed mussels and a very generous helping of grilled plaice fillet with a bowl of proper chunky chips, with the option of being cooked in beef drippimg or vegetable oil. A la carte starters at around £6 could include a dressed crab with gazpacho, six rock oysters, scallops or smoked eel strips with a soft boiled duck egg to dip them in. Mains at around £15 could include a fritto misto selection, halibut with brown shrimps, grilled whole Dover sole with crushed potatoes and asparagus, and a 40 day aged rib eye steak. He’ll be back.

Re your story “May get bargain”, please may I point out that Good Friday in 2011 cannot be on April 25, because that will be a Monday…

Thanks for correction. Hope you, and others can save some money with this one.
Years after the monopolies commission found against electrical companies supplying exhibition venues that they were guilty of overcharging and ordered a weak solution as a fix. This solution ordered that exhibitors be given the choice of at least two contractors. This resulted in no change at all save that on large shows, some halls are allocated to one particular contractor and another contractor takes the other halls. Effectively meaning, since they both-allegedly- have the same prices that no real alternatives exist.
In the Business Design Centre a different scam exists. Shell scheme exhibitors are charges around £95 for a socket whilst Space only exhibitors are charged upwards of £495 + £95 for the same service. Having been recently an exhibitor there on the balcony on a space only site I can attest how this benefits the pocket of the electrical contractor at the expense of the overcharged exhibitor.
A power feed is run off an overhead wire and drops down to feed shell scheme stands below. This wire is tensioned to the balcony, where-surprise, surprise, the power feed ends at the space only stand beyond ! Result- an easy £495 x however many space only stands there are. Perhaps exhibition organisers should ask questions when exhibitors do not rebook about the pricing policies of this venue ?
