"You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritise"
This sensible observation by US President Obama has incensed those in Las Vegas who rely on incoming visitors blowing bunches of cash at the tables. Its current mayor, Oscar Goodman, who used to be a defence lawyer for the Mob described Mr Obama as "A real slow learner" who had a "psychological hang-up" about the city. Mr Goodmans former clients were the Mob's protectors of the "skim" money stolen from the casinos, bookmaker Frank Rosenthal and his murderous enforcer Anthony Spilotro, played in the Martin Scorcese film "Casino" by Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
Obama moved quickly to reassure the Vegas operators that his comments about the city were "not negative" and that if one indeed had money to blow then there was no better place to do it.
Last year Obama said that companies should not use the public money used to bail them out on junkets to Vegas.
Football fans going to the World Cup in Capetown in June are going to need deep pockets to fund the exploitative prices being charged for accommodation.
According to a recent report in the Daily Telegraph four to five times the normal high season rates are being sought, as well as an eye-watering 30% commission to the official accommodation agent, Match. One hotel, the Cape Town Lodge has raised its price for a room from £68 to £395, an increase of 480%, which makes it £120 more a night than The Ritz in London is quoting for the same period.
South Africa's chief marketing officer for tourism, Roshene Singh has stated: "The FIFA World Cup is a great opportunity for South Africa and we are making sure we grasp it with both hands"
Indeed…
As the Catalan government is to debate the sensible banning of torturing and killing bulls for pleasure, called bullfighting, the premiere of Madrid's regional government Mrs Esperanza Aguirre is calling on Unesco to declare the sadism a part of the world's cultural heritage, on the grounds that it is really an art form.
Meanwhile another kind of spectacle known as recortes is growing in popularity, particularly with younger people. In this the bull, which has not been deliberately injured to weaken it, is encouraged to charge at unarmed recortadors, who then somersault over the bull's back, and perform other highly dangerous acrobatics, which are awarded points. Afterwards the recortadors salute the bull for being such a good sport and it lives, unlike those in the "art form" of the corrida, to return another day.
A British estate agent was given a fine and a month in prison by authorities in Dubai for "indecency"
Charlotte Adams,25, maintains that all she did was greet a male friend with a kiss on the cheek. However a Emiati woman who called the police at 2.00am claimed that the kiss was on the mouth and was supplemented with some touching of each other, although she later admitted that she didn't actually witness this herself but that it was her vulnerable daughter, with her at 2.00am who saw it and was offended by it.
Meanwhile another witness has come forward to corroborate Adam's story and there is another hearing on April 4, for the court's final verdict.
Dubai, where bribery is not illegal, bans displays of affection between men and women in public places and is, according to the Foreign Office a place where Britons are more likely to be arrested than anywhere else in the world.
A corporate event organiser working in Dubai has been given a six-month suspended sentence and 80 hours community service after being found guilty of tax evasion of £65,000.
The figure represented the income tax due on commission that was paid into a Dubai bank as cash and withdrawn by the organiser, Michael Frosh, using ATM's in the UK, to avoid detection. According to HMRC Frosh submitted false self-assessment tax returns from 2002 to 2007, when the fraud came to light after Wiltshire Police Economic Crime Unit interviewed him about suspected money laundering offences.
Frosh,57 and from Cheltenham, has had to pay back the money, plus interest and penalties, and pay £5000 towards his legal aid.
Event organisers working overseas are warned of the Bribery Act, currently going through parliament and expected to become law in the next few weeks.
Under this anyone paying a bribe could face an unlimited fine and a custodial sentence of up to ten years.
Often bribes are described as "facilitation payments" and demanded by bent customs officials looking for some extra cash to do the job they are paid to do anyway. Often it is proposed that the "normal" time for, say, clearance of goods through customs could be drastically reduced by the payment of a bribe.
In this respect Africa has always been the most corrupt area of the world, but some current rumours circulating suggest that Eastern Europe is catching up fast.
Tripadvisor has published a list of the top ten dirtiest hotels in Europe, as voted by its contributors, and eight of them are in the UK with six of those in London, which will not be good news for those selling London for the upcoming Olympics.
London properties are the Park, the Boston Court, the Cromwell Crown, the Earls Court Gardens, the Corbigoe and the Blair Victoria and Tudor Inn. The other two UK properties are the Grosvenor in Blackpool and the Minster in York and the two outside the UK are the Dam in Amsterdam and the Villaggio Club Porto Ainu in Budoni, Italy.
In the top ten dirtiest in the UK the above eight are joined by the Hanover and the Radnor Bayswater, both in London.
Tripadvisor have also published similar lists for Italy, (four in Rome), France (eight in Paris) as well as for Asia, USA and Canada.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is situated between California and Hawaii and consists of plastic bags, bottles, footwear, cans and toys all swilling around in one of the world's five great gyres, or systems of rotating currents, which can draw in waste from thousands of miles away.
